After graduating from Leibniz Universität Hannover and following several stays in Paris for work and study purposes he began his professional career in 1986 with the office of Baumschlager Eberle Architekten, which had been set up in 1985. After three years freelance work he became a shareholder in 1990. He established his own architectural practice in Bregenz in 1993 where he was active until 2000, when he assumed responsibility as managing director and shareholder in the office of Baumschlager Eberle Architekten in Lochau. In 2004, finally, he took charge within the Baumschlager Eberle Group of competitions and design. In 2006 it was decided to set up a separate design and competition department in the form of the office Baumschlager Eberle Architekten in St. Gallen, which took on the function of a competence centre. In conjunction with a number of different projects he took temporary charge in 2008 of the office Baumschlager Eberle Architekten in Beijing. Since 2008 he has been a shareholder in Baumschlager Eberle Architekten St. Gallen and Baumschlager Eberle Architekten Hong Kong and since 2012 in Baumschlager Eberle Architekten Paris. Various projects carried out in France ultimately led to the founding of a new office, which as Baumschlager Eberle Architekten Paris has represented the interests of the Baumschlager Eberle Group since 2012. In addition to designing and managing various projects Hans Ullrich Grassmann has been involved in teaching activities (HAWK Hildesheim, Leibniz Universität Hannover) and he regularly gives lectures to both local and international audiences (London, Oslo, Paris, Sofia, Dublin, Zurich, Hanover, Dresden, Merano, Venice, Göttingen, Bergen, Cannes, Copenhagen, ...).
