Four residential towers in Potsdam, Germany

The Stern-Center, a shopping complex to the south-west of Berlin, is awaiting the addition of four new residential towers after Baumschlager Eberle Architekten won over the judging panel, the City of Potsdam and investor ECE in a collaborative design competition "Wohnen am Stern". The figures speak for themselves: housing some 650 apartments and covering a gross floor area of 60,000m2, the towers will accentuate the local planning environment, providing Potsdam with a new landmark. Visible from afar across the surrounding plain, the retail centre will be flanked by four towers, two in the east and two in the west.

With their neatly configured façades, each pair will form an intrinsically sensitive ensemble, positioned to ensure that none of the apartments are exclusively north-facing. They also feature open spaces and a meeting/social area on the first floor designed to foster a sense of community. Thanks to the intelligent energy concept the roof spaces will be largely free of technical plant and so landscaped.

The flexible apartments, available in 2- and 3-bedroom versions, clearly benefit from the height of the towers, with panoramic views from all floors, while the clean, simple lines and the sculptural quality of the architecture itself reflect the calm of the surrounding countryside.
