Residential construction at the Gruner + Jahr areal in the HafenCity

Cluster and Clinker

In the design competition for the "Gruner + Jahr Development" project in Hamburg's HafenCity, the jury recently decided on the housing project of Baumschlager Eberle Architekten (BEA). In the immediate vicinity of the future office building of Gruner + Jahr, the Berlin office of BEA (managed by Gerd Jäger) is developing a meandering building structure. Advantages of this design: The approximately 200 apartments open towards the Lohsepark and turn away from the tracks in the east. The meander is reminiscent of the traditional development of the Hanseatic city, but is much more airy and varied in the urban space perception. Overhanging balconies and well-detailed façades of classic clinker accentuate the building‘s plasticity towards the park, highlighting the uniting character of the complex's architecture.
